New York Aussie Little Ruby Hits the Beach

Since 2003, New Yorkers have been hitting what is now Little Ruby’s Mulberry Street Aussie cafe for flat whites,  surfers’ breakfasts, avocado toast, and hearty salads in droves. Now, we get a shot at the Aussie meets US fave. And where better than steps from the surf in Santa Monica?

Nick Mathers (Eveleigh, Goldie’s, Dudley’s NYC, Duke Bistro Sydney), Tim Sykes (Ruby’s Café ) and Thomas Lim (Goldie’s LA, Dudley’s NYC, Duke Bistro Sydney) are bringing their game to L.A. — with a hip mod ambiance, cheery hospitality, and the soulful vegetable-forward flavors of summer.

The menu at Little Ruby’s Santa Monica features the signature dishes from the Gotham menu, along with new creations inspired by the restaurant’s new beachside locale. Chef/partner Lim is whipping up favorites like the Crispy Rice Bowla confetti of cucumber, radish, tomato, red onion, herbs, haloumi, fried egg and lime; the Rag Bol with grandma Ruby’s pepper-zucchini bolognese; and the Bronte Burger with its secret sweet chili sauce.

A variety of seasonal salads, pastas, and burgers are focused on the local farmer’s market goodies.

Lim has added a SoCal twist with market-driven salads like a Cauli Rice Bowl with heirloom cauliflower, kohlrabi, pear, arugula, fennel, puffed rice, comte, and spicy buttermilk dressing to Crispy Chicken with soft-boiled egg and a sweet chili-mustard dressing.

Save room for dessert because there’s a Sticky Date Pudding and Aussie favorite Banoffee Pot, a combo of bananas, dulce de leche ice cream and cookie crumble. Who says we Angelenos can’t be decadent?

Meet your mates for breakfast — with options like Ricotta Hotcakes with honeycomb butter; soft-scrambled Green Eggs with braised greens, avocado, peas, and kale; and the classic Big Breakfast with bacon, eggs, mushrooms, roast tomatoes, baked beans, hash browns and toast.

Of course, Little Ruby’s Avocado Toast is on the menu, along with goodies like Coffee Granola or Homemade Banana Bread with passionfruit butter that would be perfect with a La Colombe drip coffee or espresso-style beverages

Grab a smoothie or fresh-pressed juice, as well as a special sparkling concoction like the Himalayan with hazelnuts, dates, toffee stevia, coconut cream, cinnamon, and Himalayan sea salt. There’s also the Green Machine — with spinach, kale, almond milk, coconut nectar, and green protein powder — perfect after that morning bike ride.

Later in the day, grab an Aussie or domestic beer, as well as wine and spritz-style cocktails. Drinks combine Regal Rouge, a vermouth lend of native Australian aromatics with bright, crisp ingredients. The Lively mixes Regal Rouge Lively White with watermelon, lime, fresh mint and fresh apple slices; The Bold pairs Regal Rouge Bold Red with ginger beer, fresh OJ and ginger root, topped with a fresh orange wheel.

The decor is pure mod beach house — with a white stucco exterior and patio tables outside an oversized garage door, along with the neon signage. Partner/designer Mathers chose a minimalist but warm aesthetic, inspired by the roots of the owners who grew up on the beaches of Sydney.

Little Ruby Santa Monica is open seven days a week, from 8am to 11pm, for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The restaurant is located at 109 Santa Monica Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90401. For additional information, visit the website.
