Summer’s here. In SoCal that means the heat might be turned up in the triple digits, we’re thinking some Zuma time or a lazy afternoon by the pool — or one of our favorites, the rooftop.
And one of our fave rooftops is hands-down at The London. Through October-ish, The London in WeHo has moved Boxwood to the roof, a sophisticated mod lounge and restaurant on the hotel’s tenth-floor rooftop. Ah, those million-dollar views all the way to Century City and beyond. When you sign that development deal, book a night at the Vivienne Westwood suite! For us mere mortals, a hand-crafted cocktail or two and some innovative small plates in the plush lounge, an expanded dinner menu in the dining area, or the latest addition — Sunday brunch — will definitely pass muster!
This summer, the dinner menu has been kicked up a notch or two. We’re most excited about the addition of Robata to the small plates. with selections including Miso Bass, Salmon Pesto, Chicken with Lemongrass, Wagyu Beef with Soy, and Japanese Eggplant. The eclectic menu of Crudo, Shared Plates, and Starters includes twists on ever-present L.A. choices like a whimsical Tuna Tartare, Spicy Tuna Roll, Olives & Hummus, and a refreshing take on Buratta served with radicchio, apple, basil, and cherries.
Other starter options we like include a crazy good take on Tortilla Jalapeno Soup with a creamy addition of coconut, a tasty Salt & Pepper Calamari with lime ginger dipping sauce, and a Dungeness Crab Toast with green papaya.
Of course, what’s a rooftop dinner or lounge time without some great cocktails? The rooftop has a nicely curated wine list — and Tuesdays are All Day Rose. Tag The London on Facebook or Instagram with #roseallday @thelondonweho for a complimentary glass. A new addition to the innovative rock-inspired cocktail menu this summer, Shaved Ice, features a refreshing Cucumber Cooler with Vodka, St. Germain, Fresh Cucumber, Mint, and Lime; Tequila Grapefruit with fresh grapefruit and St. Germain; Mojito; and Kir Royale. Seriously. Who wouldn’t love a Kir Royale Snow Cone?
Our favorite mains include Fish & Chips, with a nod to the hotel’s moniker and crazy crispy rectangular “chips,” and the Tai Snapper served over shrimp fried rice with Thai curry and coconut sauce. If you’re in the mood for meat, try the Charcoal Grilled Skirt Steak with red quinoa and avocado or even this-is-not-just-any Cheeseburger with Taleggio, kale, truffle butter, and shitake.
Ah. Dessert. House-made ice cream and sorbets, a light Mango Cheesecake, English Sticky Toffee Pudding with brown butter ice cream, and Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch with espresso sorbet are among the tempting options.
