Back in 2009, CIA grad and rising LA chef Stu Skversky tossed his toque to move to Chiang Mai as a volunteer at local Buddhist temple Wat Dan Chan, teaching the local kids English, cooking, and baking. Aware of the need to help prepare the high-risk Hill Tribe kids after graduation, Stu founded Stu and the Kids to assist the kids with university or technical college admissions and to give them the tools for an independent future. On July 30, Stu and his posse of Who’s Who in LA food world will be whipping up food and drinks at Vibiana. All event proceeds will go directly to the children’s education costs, school uniforms, supplies, housing, food, and higher education tuition.
Now in the ninth year of fundraising throughout the world, Stu and the Kids has raised over $300,000 for the charity, including last year’s $110,000 accumulated from the LA festival, fundraising on the east coast and online donations during 2016. Stu and the Kids supervise seventeen kids, including fifteen who have earned four-year scholarships to university and a seven and fourteen-year-old that is supported with rent and food due to family hardship. The charity hopes to increase the awards to twelve four-year university scholarships in the coming year. Stu is joined by Neal and Amy Fraser, Chefs/Owners of L.A.’s Redbird, Vibiana and Fritzi to host this not-to-be-missed event for LA foodies.
The event chairs are joined by Jet Tila, Rocco Whalen, Jason Neroni, Brooke Williamson & Nick Roberts, Sherry Yard, Tetsu Yahagi, Kris Yenbamroong, Akasha Richmond and a whole list of luminaries who will create dishes for the 4th annual Thai-flavored Food & Wine Festival.
