The Wafffle's Multigrain Waffle

Waffling in LA!

The Wafffle's Multigrain Waffle

The political pregame show in full swing, we’ve decided to dedicate a piece to “waffling.” But not the “vacillating on different issues, flip flopping variety,” as defined by Merriam-Webster. The only waffling we’re doing has to do with which of LA’s best waffle dishes to try first!

Did you know the anniversary of the waffle iron’s first US patent is August 24? Celebrate with some sweet and savory waffles around town.

Syrup optional.

Roscoe's Chicken n Waffles

Of course there’s always the classic Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles, the soul food chain founded by Harlem native Herb Hudson back in the days of the disco ball and platform shoes. The SoCal culinary landmark is best known for fried chicken and waffles, paired or solo, but also offers traditional Mac & Cheese, Greens, and more.

WeHo’s ubercool pool hall meets cocktail-driven dining,  Bar10 is serving an updated twist on the classic. The menu’s Fried Chicken and Waffles ($12) pairs seasoned, breaded chicken with waffles, raspberry compote, and a side of honey for a bit of savory and sweet.

Over in Westwood, Tanzy‘s twist on the old school classic couples Crispy Chicken & Sourdough Waffles ($19), prepared with Jidori chicken and accompanied with country gravy. It’s the perfect brunch before a movie at the iPic!

Hollywood’s The Waffle has a mod retro vibe and the most novel of waffle variations, including the hip spot’s famous Red Velvet, Sticky Bun, and Strawberry Cheesecake to more savory options like Smoked Salmon, Cornmeal Jalapeno, and Applewood Smoked Bacon. That’s just for starters. If you’re down for some of The Waffle’s killer cocktails, order the Flight of Wee Waffles, featuring chive waffle with smoked salmon, herb waffle with goat cheese, and bacon waffle with grilled onions and a sunny side up egg. Since we are in LA, there are gluten free and vegan options. Four legged friends are welcome on the patio — and have their own option, Woofles, whole wheat treats with parmesan and parsley!
In Los Feliz,  hipster hang Fred 62 is home to the Bossa Nova Waffle Sundae, a tower of vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche, and whipped cream. Remember trying to keep the brownie separate from the corn in Swanson’s TV dinners? Fred’s TV dinner tributes served nightly include The Partridge Family, pan-fried chix with corn pudding, mashed potatoes, and a mini waffle with gravy!

Our fave Euro-gelato outpost in Beverly Hills, Amorino, pairs waffles with choice of gelato and toppings like strawberry or apricot jam, chocolate, caramel, Gianduja, and Chantilly cream. We’re going to have to head over this afternoon…
